How often should a chimney be swept? Once a year if you burn regularly, and before the first fire in a house you just bought or a fireplace you have not lit in years. The free camera inspection tells you whether yours needs it this season or can wait — and we will say "wait" when that is the honest answer.
What is creosote, and why does it matter?
Creosote is what wood smoke leaves behind when it cools against the inside of the flue. It starts as a sooty dust, hardens into flakes, and — in a chimney that is burned cool, burned wet, or simply never swept — bakes into a shiny, tar-like glaze. Every stage burns. A chimney fire is creosote igniting inside the flue, and it is loud, hot enough to crack a clay liner, and often not noticed until the next sweep finds the damage. Regular sweeping keeps the buildup at the dusty stage, where a brush removes it in under an hour.
What does the $199 routine sweep include?
- Camera inspection of the flue before and after, so you see the liner condition, not just our word for it.
- Rod-and-brush sweep of the full flue, top to bottom, with a HEPA vacuum capturing what falls.
- Smoke chamber and smoke shelf, where most of the loose creosote collects.
- Firebox and damper cleaned and the damper checked for full open and close.
- Drop cloths and sealed fireplace opening — the room stays clean.
- Written summary of what we found, with photos, and a plain recommendation if a mason needs to look at anything.
When is a deep cleaning needed?
When the camera shows glazed, tar-like creosote that a brush skates over. Deep cleaning (from $850) uses rotary tools and chemical treatment across more than one pass and takes most of a day. It is common in the older masonry chimneys of the 1900s borough homes in Souderton, Telford, Pennsburg and East Greenville and in Perkiomen Valley farmhouses where a wood stove ran hard for decades. If your chimney is at that stage we show you the glaze on screen before quoting, and the price is flat and written.

What if the camera finds a problem?
You get a straight answer and the photos to go with it. Missing or rusted caps, dampers that will not seal, cracked crowns and deteriorating mortar joints are common finds, and we tell you which ones are urgent and which can wait a season. We sweep and inspect; we do not rebuild. Caps, dampers, liners and masonry are a chimney mason's work, and when that is what we see, we say so instead of selling you a sweep that will not solve it.
The prefab fireplaces in many King of Prussia colonials and townhomes have their own quirks — a metal flue, a chase cover that rusts through — and the same rule applies: inspect first, and tell you plainly what we found.

Chimney Cleaning Questions
How long does a chimney sweep take?
A routine sweep with the camera inspection takes about an hour to ninety minutes. A deep cleaning for glazed creosote takes most of a day because it needs multiple passes with rotary tools and treatment between them. Either way the fireplace opening is sealed and drop cloths are down, so the room is usable as soon as we leave.
Do you sweep wood stoves and fireplace inserts?
Yes. A stove or insert with its own liner is swept from the top and cleaned at the connector, and the free camera inspection covers the liner the same way it covers a masonry flue. Tell us the model when you book so the crew brings the right rods and brushes for the flue diameter.
Does a gas fireplace need to be swept?
Gas does not leave creosote, but the flue still needs to be clear and the cap intact, and vented gas logs in an old masonry fireplace can leave corrosive deposits. A camera inspection is the right call every few years or before you buy the house. We tell you honestly if a sweep is unnecessary.
Will sweeping make a mess in my living room?
No. The fireplace opening is sealed before the brushes go in, a HEPA vacuum runs the whole time, and drop cloths cover the hearth and floor along the path to the door. Soot stays inside the sealed area and the vacuum. We wear shoe covers and clean up before the walk-through.
How do I know if my chimney actually needs cleaning?
A sooty smell after rain, black flakes in the firebox, smoke rolling back into the room, or a fireplace you have not used since you moved in are all reasons to look. The camera inspection is free and takes about twenty minutes, so the cheapest way to find out is to let us look and tell you.
What happens if the camera finds a damaged cap, damper or liner?
We photograph it, put it in the written summary and tell you whether it is urgent or can wait a season. Caps, dampers, crowns, liners and masonry are a chimney mason's work, and we say so plainly rather than sell you a sweep that will not solve it. Call (484) 367-5944 to schedule the inspection and we go from there.
